The Role
As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will play a key role in the design and delivery of mechanical building services solutions across a broad range of projects. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will contribute to developing practical, energy-efficient and technically robust engineering designs that meet both client and regulatory requirements.
You will be involved throughout the project lifecycle, from feasibility and concept design through to detailed design, construction support and project completion.
Key Responsibilities
- Design mechanical building services systems, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), domestic water services and public health systems.
- Produce mechanical calculations, technical specifications and design reports.
- Prepare and coordinate mechanical drawings and BIM models using Revit and AutoCAD.
- Collaborate closely with architects, structural engineers, electrical engineers and contractors to develop coordinated design solutions.
- Attend client meetings, design team meetings and technical workshops.
- Undertake site surveys, inspections and provide technical support during construction and commissioning.
- Ensure all designs comply with current Building Regulations, British Standards, CIBSE guidance and health and safety legislation.
- Develop sustainable and low-carbon engineering solutions, incorporating energy-efficient technologies where appropriate.
- Support project delivery by managing workloads, meeting project deadlines and maintaining high technical standards.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with clients and project stakeholders.
About You
The successful candidate will have experience in mechanical building services design and enjoy working in a collaborative consultancy environment. You will possess strong technical knowledge, excellent communication skills and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
You will have:
- A degree (or equivalent qualification) in Building Services Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Experience within a Building Services consultancy undertaking mechanical design.
- A strong understanding of HVAC, public health and mechanical building services design principles.
- Experience using industry-standard software such as Hevacomp, IES VE, Revit and AutoCAD.
- Knowledge of current Building Regulations, British Standards and CIBSE guidance.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- A proactive and detail-oriented approach to delivering high-quality engineering solutions.
- A full UK driving licence is desirable.
Desirable
- Progress towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with CIBSE or IMechE.
- Experience delivering projects across commercial, education, healthcare, residential, industrial or public sector developments.
- Knowledge of sustainable building design, net-zero strategies and renewable technologies.
- Familiarity with BIM processes and multidisciplinary project delivery.
