Role Purpose

As an Electrical Design Engineer, you will lead and contribute to the design of electrical building services across a range of projects — from concept/design development through to detailed technical design. You will work across sectors (education, healthcare, commercial, residential and specialist facilities), applying your electrical engineering expertise in building services (power, lighting, emergency systems, BMS, LV/HV distribution, earthing, etc). You will help deliver solutions that are energy-efficient, compliant with UK regulations and aligned to the company’s net-zero / low-carbon aspirations.

Key Responsibilities

1. Lead the electrical design on building services projects from initial brief / concept stage through to detailed design and specification.

3. Coordinate with mechanical, structural, civil, architectural and other disciplines to ensure integrated building services design and spatial coordination. Ensure designs meet regulatory requirements (IEE Wiring Regulations / BS 7671, BS EN standards, UK building regulations,
4. CIBSE guides, etc) plus sustainability objectives (low-carbon, energy efficient, lifecycle costing).
5. Review and select appropriate equipment, systems and technologies, considering cost, sustainability, maintainability and client requirements.
6. Liaise with clients, contractors, sub-consultants and other stakeholders; interpret client briefs and contribute to value engineering and design optimisation.
7. Undertake design checking, quality assurance, peer review of electrical engineering outputs and mentor more junior engineers.
8. Keep up to date with emerging technologies, sustainability trends, net-zero strategies, regulatory changes and incorporate these into design proposals.
9. Contribute to business development, client presentations and bidding for new work as required.

Essential Skills & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent) with relevant professional qualification (e.g., IEng/CEng or working towards). Minimum of 5-7 years (for Intermediate) up to 10+ years (for Senior) experience in electrical building services design within a consultancy environment.
Proven experience designing LV/HV distribution systems, lighting & power installations, standby/UPS systems, earthing/bonding, BMS integration in multi-storey, complex building projects. Strong technical knowledge of UK wiring regulations (BS 7671), CIBSE guidance, Building Regulations, relevant standards and sustainable design practices.
Able to produce detailed design calculations, drawings (AutoCAD/Revit preferred), specifications and schedules. Excellent coordination and communication skills; ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary design team and manage client/contractor interactions.
Strong problem-solving mindset, attention to detail, and ability to deliver high-quality design within programme and budget constraints. Understanding of low-carbon/energy efficient design, lifecycle costing, sustainability credentials and net-zero initiatives.

Desirable Skills & Experience

Chartered status (CEng/MICE/IET) or working towards it. Experience with BIM (Revit MEP) and 3D modelling. Experience in healthcare, education or heritage sectors. Experience with HV design, substations, specialist production/cleanroom facilities.

Personal Attributes

Self-motivated with ability to work independently and take ownership of design tasks.
Team-player with collaborative mindset; keen to mentor junior staff. Excellent organisational skills, able to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Commercial awareness and pragmatic approach to design and value engineering.
Passion for sustainable building services design and continual professional development.
