About the Role
Overview
An established engineering consultancy specialising in building services is seeking a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to join its growing team based in Birmingham.
This is a key leadership role responsible for delivering high-quality mechanical design solutions within the building services sector, supporting major projects across a variety of commercial, residential, and public sector developments. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership, oversee project delivery, and contribute to the continued growth of the consultancy’s building services engineering capability.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the delivery of mechanical building services design from concept through to detailed design and project completion. Provide technical leadership across building services projects, ensuring high engineering standards are maintained. Produce and review mechanical designs, specifications, calculations, and technical documentation relating to building services systems such as HVAC, heating, ventilation, and cooling. Coordinate closely with multidisciplinary teams including electrical engineers, sustainability specialists, and project managers. Manage project workloads and support the delivery of projects within agreed timelines and budgets. Provide mentoring and technical support to junior engineers and design team members within the building services team. Liaise with clients, contractors, and external stakeholders throughout project lifecycles. Ensure designs comply with relevant building services regulations, standards, and sustainability requirements. Contribute to technical development and best practice across the organisation’s building services engineering function.
Requirements
Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related discipline. Significant experience in mechanical design within the building services sector. Proven ability to lead and deliver complex building services engineering projects. Strong technical knowledge of HVAC and mechanical building services systems. Experience using industry design software and producing engineering calculations. Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage with clients and internal teams. Experience mentoring engineers within a building services consultancy environment.
Desirable
Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or working towards professional accreditation. Experience delivering large-scale or technically complex building services projects. Knowledge of sustainability and low-carbon building services design.
