Principal Electrical Design Engineer

Role Overview

I am looking for an experienced Principal Electrical Design Engineer to lead the electrical discipline within my client’s Building Services / MEP design team. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering technically robust, efficient and sustainable electrical engineering solutions across a range of building projects — from feasibility and concept design through detailed design and coordination to handover. This is a senior consultancy role requiring strong leadership, client engagement, and integrated design capability in electrical building services.

Key Responsibilities

Produce and review electrical design outputs including power distribution, lighting, emergency systems, earthing/ bonding, standby generation/UPS, communications and specialist electrical systems aligned with MEP requirements. Develop electrical performance specifications, scope of work documents, detailed calculations, schematic layouts and technical reports. Coordinate electrical design with other building services disciplines (mechanical, public health) and the wider design team using BIM/3D modelling and industry-standard tools. Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior and intermediate engineers, ensuring quality and consistency across projects. Engage directly with clients, architects, contractors and stakeholders to interpret briefs, manage expectations and present design solutions. Ensure compliance with UK regulations, building standards, health & safety requirements and sustainability best practices. Represent the electrical design discipline at project meetings and technical workshops, influencing design direction and resolving complex engineering challenges.

Skills & Experience

• Significant consultancy experience in electrical building services design within a multidisciplinary MEP environment.
• Strong technical knowledge of LV electrical systems, power distribution, lighting systems, emergency systems, data/communications infrastructure and renewable/low-carbon electrical design considerations.
• Proven track record of leading medium to large projects, with experience in both concept and detailed design delivery.
• Proficiency with electrical design software and BIM platforms such as AutoCAD, Revit (MEP), Dialux/Relux, Amtech or similar tools.
• Excellent communication, presentation and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical information clearly.
• Demonstrable leadership and mentoring skills, fostering technical excellence and team development.
• Chartered Engineer status (IET / CEng) or working towards chartership is desirable.
